years ago. also speaking tonight, first lady michelle obama. her job, reach out to women voters of both parties. cnn's edlavendera has a closer look. but, first, dana bash, what are the main priorities that democrats will be pushing tonight? >> reporter: well, democratic officials say the main priority is to remind people that this just isn't just about whether or not they should fire or hire again president obama. it's that it's going to be a choice. and this is really if you talk to any strategist of any party kind of the way you run an incumbent's re-election campaign. that it is a choice between the president and mitt romney. so they'll try to what they say is crystallize that choice between the two men. and they're also going to try to emphasize the fact that as president obama has been doing for months that they believe that the democratic party is the party for the middle class. and also talk about, they say, the accomplishments that they feel that the president hasn't gotten enough credit for, bailing out the auto industry. they believe the health care bill. they'll talk about t

the very wealthiest. when i heard president clinton with president obama with michelle, a real commitment to build the stuff that makes america. we are not going to just by giving somebody a tax break that they can invest in macao or china or other investments which is different than teachers and policemen and high speed rail that takes government. and yes, government needs revenue. so in terms of the jobs, they are going to put americans to work, and i heard a difference between the democratic convention and the republicans. >> did you hear within the democratic convention is my question, within the democratic question, did you hear a compelling case for why americans should believe that the second four years will somehow produce more jobs than the first four years? >> well, like maybe i know too much about this stuff, but we are in a recovery, slow recovery, and it will keep recovering with any luck, and if the republicans would get out of the way and let, you know, the stimulus and the investment go forward such as the democrats have proposed, we le be bwill br off. the opposite to hav

the country. i thought this was a very well orchestrated convention with michelle obama giving us more insight into barack obama the man. followed by bill clinton talking about the obama record on the economy and trying to bring people together. and then teeing it up for president obama to talk about what's next. and i thought that was very powerful. >> but you know, mo, the first lady did do a great job in her speech. bill clinton did an amazing job as well. the criticism of the president whilhe set certain goals and said this is how many js i want to create, this is what wae concerned,he environment is concerned, he didn't go into specifics and lay out how he's going to achieve those goals, mo. thatas folks. and th were disappointed he didn't use that venue to do it. >> well, look, ts speech was really the first stop in the general election campaign. and this -- i don't believe -- i know there's a lot of people wondering what kind of bounce either side is going to get. i don't believe there is going to be much bounce for either side because i believe this is going to be a continuous conversa

saw video of first lady michelle obama, already here in one of the sky boxes, a live picture there. you see michelle obama, you see her, other folks sitting in the sky box. she's talking to a number of dignitaries and people who are allowed in. so we're watching very closely to see when, in fact, president obama arrives. >> one other point about president clinton. i almost called him governor clinton. back in the day, when i didn't have any of these gray hairs. i talked to somebody who has read the speech, about the 30/30. if you have the under, you will lose. >> what a shock. >> i was on the podium the last time governor clinton nominated a democrat for president. that was michael dukakis. >> we'll still be feeding the teleprompter. >> he will give a very inspirational speech. we're at a crossroads. the american people understand that congress is not functioning, and that the president has put forward critical issues and congress will not act. president -- i think president clinton tonight will talk about their thaw crossroads and basically, do we go forward with the policies that

" to the president. fencer tim moorehouse sent out a picture. he also wrote, michelle obama and i sharing a moment, such an amazing trip to the white house. and at the conservative values voter summit this weekend, rick santorum once again taking a shot at the media and the elite saying they're against conservatives. >> we will never have the elite, smart people on our side because they believe they should have the power to tell you what to do. so our colleges and universities, they're not going to be on our side. >> and she's back. >> i'm not a witch. i'm nothing you've heard. i'm you. >> christine o'donnell, yes, she's considering running again in 2014, challenging democratic delaware senator chris coons again. she said she owes it to her supporters to consider it. imagine the ads. >>> coming up, israel's prime minister claiming he's not getting involved in american politic, but does his timing suggest otherwise? we're going to talk about that and a whole lot more with our brain trust. setting up the ns starts with arthritis pain and a choice. take tylenol or take aleve, the #1 recommended pain

of barack obama's first-term record, and they are deploying him now in swing states, even more than michelle obama, he's probably the biggest asset they have. but life is long. you never know when you're going to end up, that these two men are now embracing to this extent. >> life is really long. >> you know, the president got a bounce at the convention, and it's arguable that clinton played a big part in that. we have this new pew research center poll that i found real estate interesting. it showed, when they were asking, what was the highlight of the democratic convention, 29% bill clinton's speech, 16% said the president's speech, and michelle obama's speech was at 15%. so does that also mean that there is a downside to having president clinton -- >> oh, you mean overshadowing -- you know, he -- everybody knows hays not the candidate. i think he's a great character witness for the candidate. i think there was a dangerous dangeat the convention of that kind of a result, because you want your candidate to shine, not the person who is testifying on your behalf to shine. but i think right now

complaints are growing. does michelle obama's initiative give students enough to eat at school? "newsroom" starts now. >>> good morning. thank you so much for being with us. i'm carol costello. we begin this hour with president obama about to face two very different audiences. just minutes from now the president will address the united nations general assembly, but it's not just world leaders who will be listening to his speech about foreign policy. american voters may also tune in to his comments amid a spike in international hot spots. the latest from iran, they have reportedly test fired anti-ship missiles in the waters off its southern coast. it's possibly troubling for several reasons. according to an iranian news agency, the drill was close to u.s. led naval exercises in the persian gulf. the test comes amid spiking tensions with israel and mutual threats of military action, and it comes on a day when both presidenobama and the republican nominee, mitt romney, deliver key speeches on u.s. foreign policy. as i said, mr. obama is about to speak momentarily. mr. romney spoke in the las
